Making The Most of August

August is a time of transition. While there is still one full month of summer remaining, "Back to School" ads bombard us daily, reminding us that fall is just around the corner. Can we do both, enjoy the rest of the summer and get ready for school (or a more regular schedule)?

You can do both by using the following suggestions:

  • Review your calendar. Summer is not over yet. What do you and your family still want to do or see? Schedule some fun and relaxing activities now.
  • Slip a little organization into the fun. Check the condition of summer toys, clothes, and tableware while you are using them. Toss or donate worn or unused items. Replace items you need during clearance sales.
  • Shop Back to School sales effectively. Check your supply box to see what you need and make a list. Too many people end up with their fourth box of staples just because they were on sale. Save money and space by shopping with a list.
  • Ease into a morning routine. If you (or your kids) have been sleeping in all summer, schedule a few morning activities to get out of the house at a decent hour. It will make the transition easier.
  • Get ready at night. Now is a great time to assess old routines and start new ones. Want to eat healthier and save money? Make lunch the night before. Looking for less stress as you walk out the door? Set out what you need tomorrow before bedtime.
  • Don't worry about fall. Once you're ready for school (or work), stay away from the sale flyers and relentless commercials. Focus on the present. Put your fall "to do" list where it belongs—on September's calendar.

This month, embrace the duality of August. There's still one month of summer to play and relax. With a little planning, you can still be ready for fall. Balancing good times with a few organizational strategies will make the transition easier for you and your family.
